The concept draws inspiration from the tradition of stained glass windows, where light is not merely illumination but a narrative medium. Historically, these windows carried
stories of faith, hope, and patronage — with donors often immortalised through subtle heraldic references embedded within the composition. This project reinterprets that
tradition in a contemporary context, transforming the bottle into a vessel of meaning.
At the core of the design lies a dual interpretation of “spirit.” On one level, it reflects the humanitarian and spiritual mission of the Order of Malta. On another, it embodies the
distilled essence within the bottle itself. The Bas Armagnac, with its naturally warm amber tone, becomes an active design element — completing the visual narrative when light
passes through the label.
The chromatic composition is carefully structured to move from deeper tones toward luminous highlights, symbolising a journey from vulnerability to hope. Gold foil contours
echo the leading lines of traditional stained glass craftsmanship, while translucent colour layers allow light to interact dynamically with the surface. As a result, the design is not static;
it evolves depending on its environment, reinforcing the idea that meaning emerges through interaction.
Because this edition is created as a gift for donors, the design subtly references the heritage of patronage without direct symbolism. Instead of literal emblems, it uses abstraction
and light to honour contemporary benefactors — positioning them within a timeless lineage of support and contribution.
Produced in accordance with the competition’s specified material constraints, the label demonstrates how storytelling and sensory interaction can be achieved within realistic
production boundaries. At the same time, the concept proposes an extended vision: by increasing material translucency, the bottle could further amplify the dialogue between liquid,
light, and surface.
Ultimately, the project reframes packaging as more than a decorative layer. It becomes a medium — where light, liquid, and narrative converge to create a living, responsive experience.
